This course has taught me more than I originally thought it would. During the span of this semester, I began to realize more about
the design process. It is not about getting it right the first time, but it is about refinement. Through the help of the dean's class, I have also come to accept
failure, and that the only thing I can do is learn from it. When I first began the semester, the first project was 'in my eyes' almost impossible. The fact that 2
sheets of paper could hold up 65 lbs. was mind boggling. But what I learned from this project was the fact that there are always better ways to accomplish the
impossible. Chandra Cox said it best, "Research, research, research..." I can't tell you how much that sunk in. For the first time, I realized that I didn't know
as much as I thought I did about paper and that the only way I was going to learn -- was by research.
When it came to the mannequin, I was terrified. I had no idea on how to make a mannequin that had to show form & volume. Much less
out of foam core. There were things I liked and disliked about this project. The mannequin, altough took forever, came out to be quite an accomplishment. The
challenge for this project was to come up with a sturdy enough joint, so that the mannequin would stand up straight. One thing I didn't care for was how long it
took. The endless hours of painsticking cutting of foam core wasn't the most enjoyable time during studio. The most important thing I had to learn from this
project was the never-ending pursuit of... meticulousness.
