The main goal for this brainstorming was to acheive a design that would balance both form and function. The function for this particular project was to design a chair made out of cardboard for relaxing and reading. This chair also had to come with a carrying case that would be small enough for a person to carry from place to place with ease. To properly design a chair that would fulfill these parameters, I first had to do some research about how a person sits, the human form, and how to construct a chair efficiently so it can be easily compacted. Figure 1My first ideas were based on what I would look for in a chair. For a chair to be relaxing to me I needed a low arched back support so that my body would not be stiff upright. The other thing I look for is aesthetics. Is it a chair I would want to take places? Most of my ideas keep this in mind with smooth curves and obtuse angles. I was quick to find out that not all people look for the same things in chairs. The most important thing at this stage was research, research, research. The most successful of my sketches I took to making models out of chipboard. These models were my best five designs, in three different variations. It was in these models that I found out what could and could not be done with cardboard. I also figured out how to construct a chair without using adhesives. Below are some support ideas:
